Creating a world with its own unique tone and atmosphere using just lines and colours – that’s what American illustrator Amber Day does for her clients with each new project she tackles, producing sterling imagery for a range of fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands.
“There’s no better feeling to me than being able to tell a story through an image,” says Amber.
Travel and taste are two of her biggest passions and they show through in her imagery depicting a range of delectable dishes from around the world. Wherever she goes, she draws, and the ideas she collects form fantastic references that help her to give clients something very individual every time.
Amber studied for a degree in Visual Communications from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles.
First, Amber sketches with pen and paper, drawing the outlines. After tweaking the composition, she redraws it digitally using multiple pens on her tablet. It is finished off using her expert watercolour technique.
Amber’s subtle line work has a natural, sketched feel to it, while the addition of watercolour gives her illustrations an organic look as she controls the atmosphere using her palette, light and shadow. The candid realism of her work makes it perfect for any lifestyle-oriented project.
Amber has been commissioned by clients including The Guardian, Condé Nast, Heinz, Nordstrom, Maybelline, InStyle, Hawaiian Airlines, Jamie Magazine, Under Armour and more.
