Mythical Celebration

Denis Freitas works on an illustration for Apple in honour of the Dragon Boat Festival.

The Dragon Boat Festival has a history spanning over 2,000 years in China, commemorating Qu Yuan, a poet from the 3rd century B.C. who tragically ended his life in the Miluo River. The villagers, in an effort to honour his spirit, rowed dragon boats and threw rice balls into the river to repel fish and evil spirits. Modern-day celebrations feature dragon boat races and the preparation of "zongzi."

Denis was given complete creative freedom for this project. He employed a style often used in his works on history and mythology for the dragon. For the cityscape, he drew inspiration from his pieces focused on the future and technology. The illustration aims to blend the traditional essence of the festival with the urban landscape, showcasing the dragon's grandeur as a mythical figure. The dragon is depicted in a circular design, encircling buildings and embellished with vibrant festival decorations.

This artwork was published on the App Store in China and other Asian countries, although it remains inaccessible in the West.
