Feathers, scales or fur – they all come out perfectly when painted by British nature artist Andrew Hutchinson. Living on the North York Moors, Andrew is so passionate about nature that he’s a part-time ranger with the Forestry Commission and monitors the activity of adders and certain bird species in his area to help conserve them.
Being out and about, experiencing nature, is a crucial source of inspiration him in his work, and Andrew loves the area where he lives. The way nature, as the ultimate recycler, reclaims and transforms objects with decay is endlessly fascinating to him. He also enjoys looking at Jurassic fossils and Oriental antiques.
Training
Andrew has an NDD in illustration from the Cleveland College of Art and Design.
Approach
Andrew paints with acrylic on board. Many of his pictures are inspired by the infinite variety and complexity that are produced in the natural world, particularly in the area of texture and colour.
I paint in acrylic on board and many of the paintings I produce are inspired by the infinite variety of texture and colour that exists in the natural world.
Style
Andrew’s style is a form of enhanced realism. He aims to achieve an accurate, realistic representation but with a little added something that only a painting can give. Influences include Alan Hunt, Terence Lambert, Robert Bateman and Ray Harris-Ching.

We enjoyed working with Andrew. He is very talented in addition to being responsive and efficient - which we really appreciated
Paige Steinman, Veneer Studio
We are so pleased with Andrew Hutchinson's latest illustration for our Yorkshire Gold pack. Andrew is an absolute joy to work with - his knowledge and passion about wildlife and the countryside is truly inspiring. Everyone here at Yorkshire Tea is just in awe of his beautifully detailed illustrations, and we especially love the 'hidden' touches that make them so special. It's always fun finding the tiny stoat on the stone wall or the grouse poking it's head through the heather! Considering the detail in Andrew's painting he works really quickly and has always met our (sometimes incredibly tight) deadlines! We're really looking forward to working with Andrew again soon.
Jo Andrade, Taylors of Harrogate

Simon Yeo, Them, London
Both Andrew's depth of knowledge and passion for his subject really showed in the final art work which we are delighted with. Andrew's professionalism contributed to the smooth running of our project. Thank you, it was a pleasure working with you
