With their flowing, organic lines and soft colour palettes, Liz Merino’s illustrations are infused with both dynamism and serenity. Light and optimistic, her artwork is clear and impactful, but in a subtle way that connects us with the natural world and, sometimes, the mysteries of the universe.
Based in Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico, Liz has a background in graphic design, which led her into the world of illustration. Working in advertising, she began testing her drawing skills on an iPad and the more she drew, the more she loved it. Soon, she was developing the beautiful and unique style you can see across her portfolio today.
Clients love the way Liz dives deeply into a brief, finding ways to expand on their requests, strategically exploring the visual metaphors and storytelling that will elevate the outcome. Her inspirations include the picture book illustrator Mary Blair, Disney films and anime such as Sailor Moon and Evangelion. She’s also drawn to Guillermo del Toro’s dark fairy tales and David Bowie’s space period.
Approach
As she approaches a brief, Liz concentrates on the atmosphere she wants to capture in the imagery. This informs the sketching, which establishes the linework and eventually the composition. She’s very intentional about how she uses colourways to shape that atmosphere, and pays attention to every detail as she finishes a work.Key software
