“I don’t do subtle,” says the London-based illustrator Laura Greenan. Her goal is to capture your attention while providing a sense of escapism and nostalgia, whilst also effectively conveying the clients' message in an exciting and imaginative way.
Laura’s background is in graphic design, which is evident in her strong use of graphic shapes and pattern. But she became an illustrator to break new boundaries and try new things and that’s what she does with each commission.
Inspired by a range of diverse influences, from computer games, to the artists and illustrators Milton Glaser, Peter Max and Aubrey Beardsley, Laura has an HND in Graphic Design & Illustration from the Kent Institute of Art & Design, which is now part of UCA.
Approach
Taking an intuitive approach to each piece, Laura first researches the subject, then plots out her composition using thumbnails. She loves to explore unique compositions, finding new ways to express ideas with bold shapes and colours. She both plans and completes the hand-drawn artwork using specialist marker pen style ink brushes in the Procreate art program on the iPad.
She particularly enjoys crafting lively portraits and travel illustrations that showcase architecture with fun geometric shapes and fantastical landscapes.Key Software
ProcreateStyle
Laura's style is colorful, bold, and distinctly her own. It features dynamic swirling shapes and intricate ornamentation, drawing influences from the psychedelic vibes of the 1960s, as well as the organic motifs of Art Nouveau and the geometric patterns of Art Deco and mid-60s "mod" style. She likes artwork to be fun to look at and fun to create, and it shows.
