Lydia Silver

As though she’s playing a visual cello, Lydia Silver’s illustrations move the soul with strings of nostalgia, notes of Art Deco and vibes of psychedelia, but the tune is rendered by a modern bow. Her work evokes feelings from the past with a tangible, crafted feel, yet flexibly conveys contemporary thinking in a way that holds and intrigues the viewer.

Based in Llandudno, North Wales, Lydia is a rising star in UK illustration having served as in-house illustrator for the London Standard and ES Magazine. She’s used to tight deadlines, works with key brands across the time zones. and clients appreciate her flexibility and positive attitude. Since graduating from Hereford College of Arts in 2023 with First Class honors in Illustration and Animation, Lydia has honed a style that is ornamental, symmetrical at times, yet full of fluidity. It’s a look that’s all her own, grown from a wealth of references Lydia keeps in her journals and sketchbooks. Her extensive influences include the Art Deco movement, a wide range of music and film from the 1960s to the 80s, and illustrations from magazines during the same period such as OZ, Jacki, Petticoat and Honey.

Approach

Lydia works digitally but with a specific focus on recreating the look of vintage printing techniques, such as risograph and lithograph, as well as the grain, fiber and texture of 20th century paper stocks. Using specially chosen inky brushes, she creates flowing compositions ornamented with intricate detail.

Style

Art Deco influences are prominent in the style and structure of Lydia’s work, with psychedelic coloring, decorative elements and hints of Bohemian and maximalist sensibilities. Balanced against its vintage vibe, her drawing style has an up-to-date feel, lifting her work above pure nostalgia.
