Sic Monkie is the alias of David R Flores, a California-based illustrator and comic artist whose impactful, graphical style superbly conveys dynamic action but is flexible enough to capture the nuances of any moment. From the serious to the light-hearted, he’ll tailor his style to suit a broad range of subjects – always backed up by his expert visual storytelling.
Originally from New York, David moved to LA to become a screenwriter but is a life-long drawing fiend. He began working on storyboards for clients in the film industry before writing and illustrating his own graphic novel. From there he turned comic art and illustration into a fulltime profession, honing his own modern interpretation of the Golden Age style for his clients.
His influences include some of the biggest names in comics from around the world – John Byrne, Adam Hughes, Jamie Hewlett and Jock to name a few, as well as the 20th century great Norman Rockwell. He likes to work closely with his clients, focusing on good communication, meeting deadlines and exceeding their expectations.
Approach
Sometimes David will sketch on paper first, but usually he jumps straight into his digital process, blocking out focal points, testing perspectives and planning how he’ll lead the viewer through the imagery using his Cintiq or iPad.Key software

While his linework is strong and graphic, and his flat colours add a pop sensibility to his style, this is often juxtaposed with grainy textures for a retro feel with depth and atmosphere. David will use a more realistic style for serious subjects, tending to a cartoon aesthetic where humour comes to the fore.Languages
