Based in Sydney, Australia, Chrissy Lau’s impressive pen & ink and digital drawing skills have enabled her to develop a bold-yet-intricate style that’s perfect for fashion and beauty, lifestyle and branding projects. A professional illustrator since 2002, Chrissy’s award-winning work has featured everywhere from coins by the Royal Australian Mint to leading publications and campaigns by global brands.
Born to Chinese parents in Yorkshire, Chrissy grew up in a family that runs Chinese takeaways. She’s highly skilled with a wok and, if you’ve ever seen a cookery program where the wok is alight and the chef is flipping food up in the air – well, she can do that. She also has a degree in law but her passion has always been drawing and she’s inspired by her Chinese heritage, the alluring pattern work of Yayoi Kusama and Finnish illustrator Laura Laine.
Approach
Chrissy’s compositions develop organically but she usually starts with a focal point, adding the line work to build up the image and its textures. Flourishes of colour are added in Photoshop.Style
Flowing hair, detailed patterns and intricate line work are highlighted with dashes of colour – sometimes subtle, sometimes bold – and quirky, surreal twists. Metallic flashes occasionally give the work something extra.Awards

We challenged Chrissy with a brief to create a mural that encapsulates our agency positioning ‘Lean into Change’. I recently had the pleasure of working with Chrissy Lau on a recent campaign for the Samsung Galaxy Note II. As is often the case with technology companies and their NDAs, the project had an impossibly short timeline. We asked Chrissy to create an artwork using only the Note II device in just a few days – perhaps a tough ask given the tight timeframe and unusual medium.
Chrissy brought a level of creativity to the campaign that we had not anticipated. When we received her artwork submission, we were blown away by its sophistication and beautiful attention to detail. The team and client loved it – at least once we had convinced them that this intricate artwork had, in fact been created on the Note II. Her work and commitment to the project truly helped to brought our campaign concept to life, and her illustration was taken across many channels – including online, in video and in hundreds of billboards across Australia.
We would jump at the chance to work with Chrissy again in the future and I would highly recommend her as a skilled and professional illustrator to anyone else.
