First Flight

Diego Abreu illustrates the Wright brothers' historic first flight for Kalshi's Defining Moments series.

As part of Kalshi's Defining Moments series, Diego was commissioned to illustrate the Wright brothers' first successful powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903. The series explores pivotal moments in American history through a collection of original artworks celebrating events that helped shape the nation.

Working in an oil painting-inspired style, Diego began by researching the location and the Wright Flyer to ensure the scene was historically accurate. He then composed a dramatic sunset setting, with the aircraft crossing the last rays of daylight as onlookers, including one of the Wright brothers, celebrate the landmark achievement.

The finished illustration combines careful historical research with Diego's expressive approach to create a memorable interpretation of one of aviation's defining moments.
