Honouring a Century of Community

Juliet Percival illustrates a display board for the Shincliffe Women’s Institute Hut.

Juliet was commissioned by the Shincliffe Local History Society and Durham County Council to design and produce a fully illustrated display board commemorating the centenary of the Women’s Institute Hut in Shincliffe.

Installed in September 2023, the board honours the original hut, first built by villagers in 1922 as the Shincliffe Memorial Hall. The artwork blends hand-drawn graphite illustrations with digitally applied color washes, capturing both the historical significance and local charm of the site.

Alongside a detailed map, the design incorporates archival photographs and key historical insights, inviting viewers to explore the story of the WI Hut and its connection to Shincliffe’s past. Measuring 84cm x 60cm, the board now stands outside the hut, offering a beautifully illustrated tribute to a century of community heritage.
