Sacred Mapping

Débora Islas illustrates Kyoto’s spiritual landscape for Tricycle Magazine.

Débora was commissioned by New York–based Tricycle Magazine to create a richly detailed map of Kyoto, Japan’s former imperial capital and a city renowned for its extraordinary density of places of worship.

Her illustration highlights the presence of over 1,500 Buddhist temples, from modest shrines to vast UNESCO World Heritage monasteries, while reflecting the city’s role as the birthplace of many major schools of Japanese Buddhism.

With her precise yet evocative style, Débora conveys both the beauty of Kyoto’s geography and the depth of its spiritual heritage, offering readers a visual journey into one of the world’s most sacred urban landscapes.
