Shelley Chen - International medical illustrator. Canada

Trained as a medical illustrator, Toronto artist Shelley Chen combines her love of both art and science to create uniquely styled imagery for a whole range of applications including magazines, games, academic publications, blogs, patient information and more. From highly accurate clinical material to narrative-led comics and on to greetings cards, Shelley’s versatility, talent and experience will give any project the creative lift it needs.
Having worked in a design studio, she has a passion for problem solving and knows how to help clients by using illustration and graphic design together to communicate complex messages, while at the same time resonating with audiences. Shelley has a Masters in Biomedical Communications from the University of Toronto, and is inspired by artists like Kinu Nishimura, Inoue Takehiko, and Ashley Wood.

When creating an illustration, she focuses on finding the most effective and compelling style to communicate the subject. Often, she works completely digitally, sketching and finishing her images in Photoshop and Illustrator.

Shelley is a flexible illustrator able to work in a variety of styles depending on the brief. She uses a clean and clear graphic style in her educational pieces to maximise clarity but when it comes to editorial pieces or advertising she may switch to a more dramatic style for impact and to hold the viewer’s attention.

Some of Shelley’s clients include Benchworks, DiD Agency, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Mount Sinai Hospital New York, Redactive Media, Scholastic, Hospital for Sick Children Toronto and Tridel.
