Henry McCausland - UK based illustrator

With an interesting conceptual approach and his own individual hand-drawn style, the London-based illustrator Henry McCausland captures scenes in a unique way, imbuing them with an atmosphere no other artist can achieve. From vibrant lifestyle imagery to scenes of urban decay, his skillful line work and meticulously hand-rendered textures evoke moods that set the perfect tone for his clients’ projects.
Henry’s work is ideal in editorial and publishing contexts, but he’s also flexible and adept when it comes to working on commercial campaigns. Originally from Brighton, he has a BA in Illustration from Central Saint Martins. Inspiration comes when he looks out a train window at the utilitarian architecture, adorned with graffiti and gradually changing as nature takes over.

Approach

From line drawn characters and objects to nature-inspired textures, every element in one of Henry’s images is created by hand using paint and/or ink on paper – there are no artificial ingredients in his illustrations. He then assembles the composition and perfects it using his computer.

Styles

Henry’s artworks can be split into two main styles. Firstly, he creates full colour scenes with lots of colour, detail, texture and atmosphere. His second style focuses more heavily on line illustrations of places and buildings, accurate to real-world proportions but lighter on detail and with some personality or humour added.

Client list

Henry’s client list includes Rapha, The Guardian, Omega Watches, The New York Times, The New Yorker, GQ, Outside magazine, Macmillan Cancer Support and Tilsor.
